Our January theme at YOGAthletix is “Be Dedicated” and thus our focus is all about stick-to-it-ivness. True, that’s not really a word, but the idea is pretty clear. How do you make goals and then stick to them?

In January it is customary to set goals to make changes, with the New Year promising a clean slate and a new start. Unfortunately it’s also very common to let the goals slide off, little by little, with dark days and cold weather. So how can you stay dedicated to your goals and New Year’s Resolutions?

Try these four tips:

1.   Make your goal S.M.A.R.T.

If you haven’t heard that before it stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely. Basically it means break down your goal into enough details that you can actually achieve it. Instead of a goal like “I’m going to work out more this month”, apply SMART and rephrase it:

I will (S) exercise (A and R) three times a week for (M) at least 30 min. (T) this month.

2.    Be positive.

This one is really important. Instead of “I won’t eat as much chocolate” try “I will eat healthy foods that nourish me”. This is all about the mindset. When we think positive we are motivated to achieve more.

3.   Bring a friend.

There’s nothing quite as motivating as accountability. Knowing you have someone to rely on, share with, impress, report to, compete with and who is relying on you, means you can’t quit. It’s easy to hit the snooze button and sleep through your workout if no one is depending on you to show up. The buddy system is a great way to stay dedicated to your goals.

4.   Celebrate your Success.

Giving yourself that positive praise is so important to stick to your goals because that’s what makes them worth it.

Did you have a smaller piece of chocolate today than yesterday? Yay! A pat on the back.

Did you take the stairs instead of the elevator? Yay! I high five.

Did you come to YOGAthletix and try a new class this week? Yay! Smiles and claps all around.

Be proud of your achievements each and every day!

Staying dedicated isn’t all about will power, it’s also about being purposeful and enthusiastic. Know what you want, have fun doing it and be proud of every step you take and you’ll find it easy to stick with it.
